5. How Do I Prepare For My Appointment?
1. DOES ACUPUNCTURE HURT?
Acupuncture is not generally painful. Every effort is made to ensure your comfort. If a point does not feel good to you within seconds of insertion, please say something. Acupuncture should be a comfortable and enjoyable experience.
2. WORRIED ABOUT NEEDLES?
Only STERILE, single use, stainless steel needles are used. They are extremely thin and non-hollow, about the thickness of a strand of hair. There are alternatives to acupuncture that may be a good option for you, if you are very needle phobic.
3. WHERE DO THE NEEDLES GO?
Points are located all over the body. Typically 5-15 points are needled in a session. Points are chosen based on your particular issue/s and how it is affecting your energy flow that day. Most often, the points used are located below the elbows and knees, on the abdomen or back. Needle depth varies depending on point location and your body’s response during needle placement. Needle depth is about a centimeter for most bodily points, and a couple millimeters for very delicate areas.
4. DO YOU ACCEPT INSURANCE?
Acupuncture is considered an “eligible expense” for FSA, HSA, and HRA accounts.
EAST is not an in-network provider. However, a super bill can be provided to you upon request. This is the form that insurance companies require to reimburse you for medical services.
Call your insurance company to determine if you have an acupuncture benefit, and if your particular condition is covered. Sometimes a policy will only cover acupuncture for pain related conditions and nausea.
5. HOW DO I PREPARE FOR MY APPOINTMENT?
Bring lab work/test results with you.
Please fill out the intake form that is emailed to you. Make sure to have a current list of medications, and supplements (including brand and dose).
It is good not to arrive with an empty stomach as that can increase your risk of fainting. Please have a snack or meal before coming to your appointment.
Wear loose fitting clothing or bring a pair of shorts to change into.
Afterward you may feel very relaxed, sleepy, or energized. It is best not to schedule much after your session, including workouts. Take it easy, hydrate, and if you have any sensations you're unsure about, notify us.
6. HOW DOES ACUPUNCTURE WORK?
Acupuncture stimulates blood flow and neurochemical responses by inserting needles into points along known pathways of energy. In other words, Acupuncture is the stimulation of points to regulate the flow of Qi.
